Bursaries

There are a number of bursaries available to assist you to attend IMC21. Please take a look at the information below:

Congress Bursaries

The Royal Microscopical Society are able to offer a limited number of travel bursaries to those planning to attend IMC21 Congress. As a limited bursary fund, awards will be made on a first come first served basis. IMC21 bursaries are open to both RMS members and non-members.

Bursary contributions will be based on the distance travelled from normal place of work to the event in Liverpool (using the same formula as normal RMS bursaries):

  • £125, up to 300km away from your place of work
  • £200, 300-2000km away from your place of work
  • £300, over 2000km away from your place of work

The following points should be noted when applying:

  • Please write a minimum of 300 words to explain how will attending this conference benefit you.
  • It is anticipated that where these sums are insufficient to cover all costs of attending IMC21, they will be used as ‘leverage’ for additional support from elsewhere.
  • After the conference bursary recipients will prepare a short report which may be published in infocus.
  • Payment will be made after the event, on completing an RMS Expense Form and producing the relevant receipts and report, the deadline for which is 31 October 2026.

Care & Support Grants

We are pleased to announce that we are piloting a Care and Support Grant scheme for IMC21. These grants are designed to help with the additional caring or childcare costs that are incurred when trying to attend a conference. It may be that you need to cover a few hours additional childcare costs at the end of the day or get extra support for a caring responsibility.

  • The Care & Support Grants are open to RMS members and non-members for IMC21
  • Recipients must have registered, paid and attended IMC21
  • A Care & Support Grant may be awarded in addition to a travel bursary
  • The grant will be paid after attendance, on submission of expense claim and relevant receipts, and a short report/testimonial about attending IMC21, the deadline for which is 31 October 2026.
  • We have a limited fund and this will be awarded on first come first served basis
